January 2024: Prof Rufus Olusola Akinyemi – African Male Researcher of the Month
Prof Rufus Olusola Akinyemi is a distinguished figure in the field of Geriatric Neurology and Translational Neuroscience, and his recent accolade as the recipient of the 2023 Nigeria Academy of Science (NAS) Gold Medal Prize for Life Sciences is a testament to his outstanding contributions to the scientific community. Born with a passion for unraveling the complexities of brain disorders, Professor Akinyemi’s academic journey has been marked by excellence, dedication, and a commitment to advancing medical science.

A proud alumnus of the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Professor Akinyemi graduated in 1998 with an MBBS degree. His pursuit of knowledge and specialization led him to undertake professional postgraduate training in Internal Medicine at the Department of Medicine, University College Hospital, Ibadan. In 2006, he obtained fellowships from the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria in Internal Medicine and Neurology, marking the beginning of his impactful career in the medical field.
Further enriching his academic profile, Professor Akinyemi earned a master’s degree in Cell Biology and Genetics from the Department of Zoology, University of Ibadan, in 2007. He later pursued a Ph.D. at Newcastle University, United Kingdom, completing his doctoral studies in 2014. This diverse educational background has equipped him with a comprehensive understanding of neurobiology, genetics, and cell biology, laying the foundation for his groundbreaking research endeavors.
Upon joining the University of Ibadan in 2015 as a senior research fellow in the Neuroscience and Ageing Research Unit, Institute for Advanced Medical Research and Training (IAMRAT), Professor Akinyemi has consistently demonstrated leadership and innovation. His joint academic appointments in the Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, the Department of Medicine, and the Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences showcase the interdisciplinary nature of his contributions.
Notably, Professor Akinyemi’s research over the last decade has focused on stroke, post-stroke vascular cognitive impairment and dementia (PSVCID), and stroke biobanking. His work has yielded novel outputs with the potential to influence millions of lives in the era of precision medicine. His collaboration with fellow researchers has significantly advanced the understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying vascular cognitive impairment and dementia, particularly emphasizing the role of neuroinflammation in the pathobiology of these disorders.
One of Professor Akinyemi’s remarkable achievements is the establishment of the largest neurobiobank in Africa under his leadership. This facility, housing over 170,000 blood fractions, including extracted DNA, from stroke patients and control subjects, represents a milestone in the region’s scientific infrastructure. The impact of his work extends beyond the laboratory, as he has improved the understanding of the genetic epidemiology of strokes among individuals with African ancestry, unveiling novel targets for prevention and demonstrating the feasibility of precision treatment.
In acknowledgment of his outstanding contributions to science, Professor Akinyemi was awarded the 2023 NAS Gold Medal Prize for Life Sciences by the Nigerian Academy of Science. This prestigious award, instituted in 2016, recognizes deserving Nigerian scientists who have made significant achievements in science with national relevance and global resonance. The award, comprising a medal, a certificate, and a purse, will be presented to Professor Akinyemi during the Fifth NAS Annual Scientific Conference on January 24, 2024, in Lagos, Nigeria.
Beyond his research endeavors, Professor Akinyemi has actively contributed to the broader scientific community. He serves as an editorial board member for multiple esteemed international journals, including the Lancet and Nature. His involvement in steering committees and executive committees reflects his commitment to collaborative efforts, such as the H3Africa Consortium, International Stroke Genetics Consortium, and the WSO–WHO–Lancet Neurology Commission on Stroke.
In addition to his academic and research achievements, Professor Akinyemi is recognized for his dedication to public health. He played a pivotal role in establishing the Abeokuta Stroke Foundation, the African Stroke Organization (ASO), and the African Dementia Consortium (AfDC), showcasing his commitment to defeating stroke and dementia at both local and continental levels.
Professor Rufus Olusola Akinyemi’s contributions to scientific research, medical knowledge, and public health exemplify the impact that dedicated individuals can have on society. His legacy as a trailblazer in the life sciences is solidified by the 2023 NAS Gold Medal Prize, and his work continues to inspire future generations of researchers and healthcare professionals. As an accomplished physician-scientist, Professor Akinyemi’s journey is characterized by a relentless pursuit of excellence and a commitment to advancing the frontiers of knowledge in the field of neurology and neuroscience.
