Empowering African Scholarship in the Humanities
The Enhancing Humanities Research in Africa (EHURA) programme, a visionary initiative of the African Humanities Association (AHA) supported by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, is now accepting applications for the 2025/2026 Postdoctoral Fellowship Awards.
This prestigious fellowship is designed to nurture a new generation of African scholars who are redefining the frontiers of knowledge in the humanities and related social sciences. By providing targeted research support and fostering intellectual collaboration, EHURA seeks to strengthen Africa’s capacity to produce globally relevant, locally grounded scholarship that reflects the continent’s unique cultural, philosophical, and historical experiences.
About the Fellowship
The EHURA Postdoctoral Fellowship supports early-career scholars who have recently completed their PhD and are seeking to deepen their research expertise through innovative, high-quality projects. The program emphasizes the integration of qualitative research methodologies that enrich understanding of human culture, thought, and society — while encouraging creative engagement with emerging technologies and digital humanities.
Proposals that examine the intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and African narratives are particularly encouraged. These might include studies that:
-
Explore how AI can be ethically and creatively used to interpret, preserve, and disseminate African knowledge systems.
-
Investigate the cultural implications of AI in storytelling, memory, and identity.
-
Develop digital tools for archiving and revitalizing indigenous languages, oral traditions, and historical materials.
Through this lens, EHURA aims to position African scholars at the forefront of the global digital humanities movement, ensuring that African voices and epistemologies shape the evolving relationship between technology and culture.
